Encrypted DMs were introduced on popular photo and video sharing platform Instagram in 2023. But now the company has decided to stop this feature. Due to this, many questions have been raised about the privacy of users. By turning off end-to-end encryption, users’ Instagram messages will no longer be private.

What did the company say in the blog post?

The company shared information about the change in a blog post released in March. In this, the company said that if your chats are affected by this change, you will be given instructions on how you can download the relevant messages or media and keep them safe. This means that after the changes are applied, users can backup and download their chats, which they want to keep private.

End-to-end encryption on Instagram has been removed. This means that any tech savvy person will be able to see your messages. Now your chats will not be private and can be misused. This change is currently limited to social media platform Instagram only. Meta has not yet clarified whether the change will be rolled out to Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp as well.

Why did Meta take this decision?

The reason behind this decision taken by the company is said to be the safety of children. In March of this year, a jury in New Mexico fined the Meta company $375 million. At the time, it was accused of misleading consumers about the safety of the platform and promoting harmful practices such as child sexual exploitation. After this now the company has announced this big decision. After end-to-end encryption is removed, the company will be able to scan messages if needed. This can help detect content related to child sexual abuse material (CSAM), grooming or other forms of harassment.
