Priyanka Gandhi in Kerala 'Kasavu' saree: A tribute to tradition and Wayanad

Mumbai: Wearing the traditional Kerala Kasavu saree, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took the oath of affirmation as a member of the Lower House of Parliament, holding a copy of the Constitution in her hands.

With this, she joins her brother Rahul Gandhi, who represents Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli constituency, and her mother Sonia Gandhi, a member of the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan, in Parliament.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s first day as a Member of Parliament was both politically significant and emotionally poignant. As she took her oath in the Lok Sabha, her traditional Kerala Kasavu saree, was a choice that honoured her heritage and evoked memories of her grandmother, Indira Gandhi.

Kerala Kasavu saree

The Kerala Kasavu saree holds deep cultural value, symbolising the unity and tradition of Kerala. The understated yet graceful white saree with a gold border reflected Priyanka’s strong ties to her heritage and the people of Wayanad, her constituency.

By choosing it, Priyanka honoured both her roots and the voters of Wayanad, who supported her in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

Indira Gandhi, known for using symbolism to convey political messages, often wore similar traditional attire during her time in office, making the visual similarity between the two generations even more striking.

Reflecting on this moment, Priyanka acknowledged her grandmother and her late father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, noting how their influence shaped this historic occasion.

Her victory in Wayanad was a decisive one, as she triumphed over Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India (CPI) with a margin of 4,10,931 votes. This seat, long a Congress stronghold, had become vacant after Rahul Gandhi moved to Raebareli following his win in both constituencies.

After taking her oath as a member of the Lok Sabha representing Kerala’s Wayanad constituency, Priyanka Vadra shared with reporters, “My focus will be on raising key issues affecting the nation.” She emphasised that the Constitution is paramount and expressed her commitment to defending it.

Expressing joy at Priyanka’s success, Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), said, “We are all very happy and proud.” Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, shared a post on social media, writing, “Proud of you Priyanka.”

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also congratulated her, stating that she would become a strong voice for the people, particularly women, in Parliament. He highlighted her leadership qualities, compassion, courage, and unwavering commitment to the Constitution, which he believes will greatly benefit the country.
