MNREGA Renamed: The Central Government is going to change the name of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) to ‘Pujya Bapu Rural Employment Scheme’. Expressing objection to this decision of the government, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi has called it a wasteful expenditure. Priyanka Gandhi said that the process of changing the name also costs money, so what is the use of doing it unnecessarily?”

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra told reporters on Saturday, “I don’t understand the thinking behind this. First of all, it is Mahatma Gandhi’s name, and when the name is changed, the government’s resources are again spent on it… This is a big process which also costs money, so what is the point of doing this unnecessarily? I don’t understand.” Congress MP Rajeev Shukla said on the issue, “I saw Priyanka Gandhi raising the issue as to why Mahatma Gandhi’s name is being removed. Many people in Gujarat have the name ‘Bapu’. This step seems unnecessary, yet it is being brought.”
Let us tell you that MNREGA was started during the UPA government of Manmohan Singh, this act was passed on 23 August 2005 and was implemented in February 2006. MNREGA guarantees 100 days of employment to rural families. It was initially called the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005. By 2022-23, 15.4 crore people were actively working under MNREGA. Apart from providing economic security and creating rural wealth, MNREGA has been instrumental in protecting the environment, empowering rural women, reducing rural-urban migration and promoting social equality, among other development tasks.
