‘Promises are meant to be kept, but…’ Sachin Tendulkar remembers former Indian player Gursharan Singh’s performance

Delhi defeated Rest of India by 309 runs in the match played at Wankhede Stadium. Only Sachin Tendulkar could bat well for the team in this match. Tendulkar had hit 103 runs not out. Former Indian opener WV Raman was the second highest run-scorer with 41 runs. Chasing a target of 554, Rest of India lost nine wickets for 209 runs. Then former India, Delhi and Punjab player Gursharan came in to bat at number 11 despite a fractured hand and supported Tendulkar. Both added 36 runs for the last wicket. Gursharan retired after Tendulkar’s century. Therefore, India’s second innings was limited to 245 runs.

Sachin Tendulkar said at an event organized by Ageus Federal Life Insurance here, “As they say, promises are meant to be kept. I think I would go a step further and say that promises are meant to be kept, but also fulfilled… and that is our DNA. I remember an incident. Many years ago, in 1989, when I was playing in the Irani Trophy. It was like a Test match before being selected for India. I was batting around 90 and my partner Gursharan Singh was injured. He had a fractured hand and could not bat. However, the chairman of the selectors, Raj Singh Dungarpur, asked him to go out and support his partner (Tendulkar).
