Protest at AI Summit: Congress gets big relief… Delhi court grants bail to Youth Congress President Uday Bhanu Chib

New Delhi: A Delhi court has granted bail to Indian Youth Congress (IYC) president Uday Bhanu Chib, who was arrested in connection with the protest at the ‘India AI Impact Summit’. Chib was produced before the duty magistrate at around 1 am on Friday after the expiry of his four-day police custody. On February 24, the court sent Chib to four days’ police custody. Duty Magistrate Vanshika Mehta was hearing a plea by Delhi Police seeking extension of Chib’s custody by seven more days.

However, he rejected the petition and granted bail to Chib. Speaking to the media, Chib’s lawyer said that the magistrate has directed his client to deposit a surety bond of Rs 50,000 and also to deposit his passport and electronic equipment. Chib’s lawyer said, “The duty magistrate granted bail to Uday Bhanu Chib and clarified in the bail order that the crime branch of the police has been unable to explain the reasons for extending the police custody of Uday Bhanu Chib.”

The court had on February 24 granted four-day custody of Chib to interrogate him about his role in the protests at the AI conference held at Bharat Mandapam. Members of the Indian Youth Congress had protested by taking off their shirts at the AI conference. They were wearing T-shirts under their shirts on which slogans were written against the government and the India-US trade agreement. The protesters also reportedly clashed with security personnel and policemen deployed at the venue.
