Protests intensify in Iran amid economic crisis, ‘Revolutionary Guard’ member dies

Dubai. A volunteer member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has been killed during protests against the poor economy in a western province of Iran. Authorities gave this information on Thursday. This is said to be the first death among security forces during the protests. There are fears over the death of a 21-year-old volunteer of ‘Basij Force’ on Wednesday night that the Iranian government’s action against the protests may become more stringent. Protests may have slowed down in the capital Tehran, but they are spreading to other provinces.

State news agency IRNA confirmed the death of a Revolutionary Guard member, but did not provide details. ‘Student News Network’, considered close to Basij, quoted Saeed Pourali, deputy governor of Lorestan province, as saying that the protesters were responsible for the death. According to Paurali, “The guard member was martyred while protecting public order in this city.”

He said 13 other Basij members and policemen were also injured. He said that these protests are taking place due to economic crisis, inflation and are an expression of livelihood concerns. He also said that the concerns of the citizens should be addressed wisely. These demonstrations took place in the city of Kouhdasht, located about 400 kilometers south-west of Tehran. The government led by the country’s President Masoud Pejeshkian is trying to dialogue with the protesters.
