Mohsin Naqvi Makes Bold IPL Claim, Says PSL Can Become World’s No.1 T20 League
PSL 2026: Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi has made a bold statement about the future of the Pakistan Super League, suggesting that the competition is on track to challenge the Indian Premier League, currently the world’s most valuable T20 league. He believes the PSL is expanding quickly and could eventually become the top franchise tournament in the world.
His comments come during a period when the 11th edition of the PSL is underway, but under certain limitations. Matches are being held at only two venues due to regional tensions, while the IPL continues its usual format across multiple cities in India without any interruptions.
Strong Focus on Investment Growth – Mohsin Naqvi
Speaking at a meeting of the PCB Board of Governors, Naqvi highlighted growing investor interest as one of the main reasons behind his confidence in the league’s future.
“The PSL has now become the best market for investment,” Naqvi said. “The time is not far when the PSL will become the world’s number one league.”
He also pointed out that the response around PSL 2026 franchise-related activity shows increasing trust in Pakistan’s cricket structure and its commercial potential.
PSL vs IPL: PSL Compared to IPL in Scale
Despite the optimism, there remains a wide gap between the PSL and IPL when it comes to financial strength and global reach. The IPL’s media rights are worth around USD 6 billion, while the PSL stands at roughly USD 93 million. On an annual basis, the IPL generates over USD 1 billion in revenue, whereas the PSL brings in close to USD 60 million.
A recent ranking by the World Cricketers’ Association also reflects this difference. The PSL is placed fifth with 48 points, while the IPL sits in third place with 62.2 points. Ahead of both are The Hundred with 75.2 points and SA20 with 68 points.
PSL 2026: On-Field and Off-Field Challenges
The current PSL season has also seen a few controversies. Fakhar Zaman was found guilty in a ball-tampering case and received a two-match suspension.
In another incident, Shaheen Afridi and Sikandar Raza were fined after they were found to have brought unauthorised guests into the team hotel, which was treated as a breach of security rules.
Looking Ahead
While the gap between the PSL and IPL remains significant for now, Naqvi’s remarks underline a strong belief within the PCB that the league’s growth potential is far from limited.
