In a decisive move to tackle mounting traffic pressure and future-proof a critical transport corridor, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is planning to upgrade the Mumbai-Pune Expressway into a 10-lane “superhighway.” This marks a significant revision from the earlier 8-lane proposal, with the total project estimated at ₹14,260 crore, including ₹8,440 crore dedicated to construction.
Since its inauguration in 2002, the expressway has become one of India’s busiest roadwaysstruggling to keep pace with rapidly increasing vehicle numbers. On weekdays, traffic routinely exceeds 65,000 vehicles, while weekends see the count surge past one lakh. This persistent congestion has made expansion not just desirable but essential. Officials confirmed that the detailed project report (DPR) is nearing completion and will soon be submitted to the state government for approval.
Funding the Future, Smoothing the Journey
The ambitious expansion aims to significantly reduce travel time, especially during peak weekend rushes, while ensuring smoother and more efficient journeys throughout the year. Notably, the project will be funded through toll revenue rather than direct government expenditure. Although toll collection is currently authorized until 2045, MSRDC may request an extension to ensure the project remains financially viable.
The proposed widening will cover 67 km of the total 94.6 km stretch, excluding the already ongoing 13-km “missing link” project in the Khandala Ghat section. Encouragingly, land acquisition challenges are expected to be minimal, as MSRDC already possesses most of the required land along the route.
The plan has been met with widespread approval from commuters and political leaders alike, who view it as a long-overdue upgrade to a lifeline that connects two major urban centers.
