Pune railway station will be transformed; 398 crore project approved
Pune Railway Station | Pune railway station is known as an important railway station not only in western Maharashtra but also in western part of the country. Pune city is the home of education and many industrial and IT companies are located in Pune. As a result thousands of people from all over the country come to Pune for jobs or other business. So Pune railway station is always crowded. Since Pune railway station has train services all over Maharashtra and important cities of the country, there is a lot of pressure on the station as well. In such a situation, Central Railway has decided to transform the Pune railway station.
The Pune Division of the Central Railway has undertaken a major project of ‘Yard Remodeling’ i.e. yard reconstruction at the Pune Railway Station. The objective of the project is to increase passenger comfort, increase station capacity and reduce congestion. In this regard, Divisional Railway Manager Rajesh Kumar Verma said in a press conference that approval of Rs 398 crore has been received for this project. This includes construction of 6 new platforms, expansion of existing platforms and creation of more accessible entry and exit gates for passengers. The work will be done in phases to ensure smooth running of railway services. Plans for a complete redevelopment of the station are now in final stages.

The Pune division reported a revenue of Rs 2,238.20 crore in the financial year 2025-26, which is 3.7% higher than the previous year. Passenger revenue stood at Rs 1,657.24 crore, a growth of 13%. Revenue from ticket inspection grew by 57.5% to Rs 30 crore. Revenue from advertising, catering and parking services also continued to grow steadily. Passenger traffic across the region increased by 6.3% during this period.
Keeping in view the seasonal demand, the department ran special trains. More than 1,100 additional services were included during Diwali, Chhath, Christmas, New Year and Holi. New train services were launched connecting Pune city with important places like Jodhpur, Rewa, Ajni, Tirupati and Muzaffarpur. It was the first time that the train ran up to Beed. The expansion of infrastructure under the Pune Congestion Relief Initiative includes the modernization of the Coaching Terminals at Hadapsar and Khadki. This includes increasing yard capacity and building more platforms. A number of projects focusing on passenger facilities, station buildings and foot overbridges have also been sanctioned to strengthen long-term efficiency. On the safety front, the department recorded major achievements such as removal of eight level crossings, construction of several overbridges and underpasses, and a 24% reduction in signaling and telecom breakdowns. Electrification of 149 km of railway line was also completed, along with improvements to the overhead equipment system. Many stations were modernized under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. It includes lifts, escalators, energy saving technology and conversion of 17 trains into rex LHB coaches to enhance safety and comfort. More than 500 CCTV cameras have been installed at the stations. Rakesh Kumar Verma said that the Pune division has made significant progress in infrastructure, efficiency improvement and passenger services and will continue to focus on this progress in the future.
