Pune Water Dam Storage | While waiting for the arrival of monsoon in the state, an alarming picture has emerged from Pune division. During the pre-monsoon period, the water storage in the dams of the Pune division has reached only 25.26 percent, which is the lowest among all the divisions in Maharashtra. As a result, drinking water supply, agricultural irrigation and urban water management are likely to face serious challenges in the coming weeks.

According to the latest data released by the Maharashtra Water Resources Department, over 3,000 small and large dams in the state currently have an average of 33.95 percent water storage available. However, as the water storage in Pune division is significantly lower than the state average, it has added to the administration’s worries. Interestingly, major responsibility of water supply to Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad and adjoining rural areas depends on these dams.

During the same period last year, 22.29 percent water storage was available in the dams of Pune division. Although there has been some improvement this year, the situation is still not entirely satisfactory. Because, due to rising temperature in April and May, the water level in the dams is falling rapidly. On the other hand, increasing heat has increased the demand for drinking water in both urban and rural areas. Along with that, due to the increase in the need for irrigation for agriculture, the available water resources are decreasing rapidly, the officials have explained. Due to this, the possibility of water shortage or planned water supply in the future cannot be ruled out in many areas.

Pune Division is considered to be a very important industrial, educational and population division of the state. As fast-growing cities like Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad depend heavily on dams for water supply, depletion of dam storage is becoming a headache for administration. Meanwhile, compared to other divisions of the state, it has been revealed that the maximum water reserve of 44.39 percent is available in Amravati division. Under that, 42.66 percent in Nagpur division, 38.38 percent in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, 37.76 percent in Konkan division, and 34.60 percent in Nashik division have been recorded. This makes it clear that the situation in Pune division is more serious as compared to other parts.

Against this backdrop, the Water Resources Department has appealed to citizens and farmers to use water very carefully. The administration has highlighted the need of the hour to avoid wastage of water, use only as much as necessary and manage the available resources responsibly. Now everyone’s attention is on the coming monsoon, and it is hoped that this worry will be relieved only if there is a satisfactory rainfall.
