At Shri Fatehgarh Sahib, Aam Aadmi Party MLA along with the Sangat participated in the cleanliness service and got the privilege of serving Mata Gujri Ji and Chhote Sahibzadas on the holy land. This service program was organized at the sacred place where the story of the greatest sacrifice in Sikh history is recorded. The MLA served shoulder to shoulder with the local Sangat with brooms and other cleaning equipment, which shows the humility and commitment of the Punjab Government towards public service.
The Punjab Government had recently taken a historic decision to declare Sri Amritsar Sahib, Sri Anandpur Sahib and Sri Fatehgarh Sahib as Holy Cities. This move not only gives special status to the holy pilgrimage sites of Sikhism, but also sends a strong message towards development, cleanliness of these cities and promotion of religious tourism. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government has prepared special development plans for these holy cities which include improvement of infrastructure, expansion of tourism facilities and maintenance of religious places. By getting the status of Holy City, trade, employment and economic activities are also expected to increase in these cities.
This service rendered by the Aam Aadmi Party MLA is not just a symbolic programme, but it reflects the government’s commitment towards making Punjab a sacred and progressive state. The government has taken several important steps in the last two years such as maintenance of religious places, improving facilities for pilgrims and cleaning of holy rivers. The presence of the MLAs in Fatehgarh Sahib and their spirit of service has also inspired the local Sangat. People appreciated this initiative and said that this is the first time that people in power are coming down to the ground and serving the general public.

The Punjab government’s plans include development of green belts around holy cities, creating a pollution-free environment and preservation of cultural heritage. After being declared as Holy Cities, ban on sale of liquor, no smoking zones and strict rules for environmental protection have been implemented in these cities. This will not only maintain the religious atmosphere but will also give the young generation an opportunity to connect with their rich heritage. The government has also allocated special funds for these cities on the lines of smart city projects.
Religious and social organizations have also appreciated this approach of the Punjab government. Many members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Management Committee said that giving the status of Holy City will give global recognition to the holy places of Sikhism. Local businessmen and hotel owners have also welcomed the move as it will increase religious tourism and create new employment opportunities. The general public believes that if the government continues to work like this, Punjab can truly become an ideal state.
