Steps taken to ensure rational use of people’s money

The state government launched the biggest road construction project with a target of constructing 44,920 km of roads at a total cost of Rs 16,209 crore.

Punjab News: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann today ordered to issue a show cause notice against the contractor and stop all his payments immediately after irregularities were found in the construction of Ritkhedi Link Road in Patiala district. It is worth mentioning that today the Chief Minister inspected three under-construction roads, out of which the construction work of two roads was found to be correct, while defects were found in the construction of one road. The Chief Minister, who came for a surprise inspection of the under-construction road, expressed strong displeasure over non-compliance of the prescribed standards after taking samples of the road. He directed the officials to issue show cause notice to the contractor and stop his payment immediately. Bhagwant Singh Mann also inspected the Patiala-Sirhind road under construction in Patiala district and asked the officials to get the samples of the road done laboratory test. Apart from this, he also inspected Roorkee to Riunna Palain road in Fatehgarh Sahib district.

The Chief Minister said that the purpose of examining these under-construction roads is to check the quality of the roads being built in the entire state. He said that the state government is spending huge amount, hence this campaign has been started to ensure construction of high quality roads in the state. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that they will continue this surprise check in the coming days as they are fully committed to ensure that public money is properly utilized. The Chief Minister said that this surprise check has been done to ensure that the money coming for road construction is spent properly and the roads are made with the best material. He said that all concerned departments have been directed to ensure proper coordination so that sewerage lines, drinking water pipes, fiber and all other works are completed before the road construction. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that this will cause minimal damage to the newly constructed roads in the entire state, which will ensure rational use of public money.

Making a strong appeal to the people, the Chief Minister urged them to personally monitor the ongoing road construction work as it is the people’s own property. He said that the general public should monitor this work and if any irregularity is found then it should be brought to the notice of the state government. Bhagwant Singh Mann assured of strictest action against the contractors who are negligent in their work. The Chief Minister said that it is a matter of great pride and satisfaction that the government has started the largest road construction work in the history of the state, with a target of constructing 44,920 kilometers of roads at a total cost of Rs 16,209 crore. He said that by the end of next year, the state government will construct 44,920 kilometers of roads in all the villages, towns and cities of Punjab at a total cost of Rs 16,209 crore. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that a 5-year maintenance condition has been attached with the construction of all these roads, which will ensure world class road safety standards as well as high quality standards.

The Chief Minister said that the objective of this step is to provide better roads in the state and strengthen rural infrastructure. He said that the state government has already started construction of 19,373 km of rural link roads at a total cost of Rs 4,092 crore. He said that due to the widespread devastation caused by floods this year, there was heavy damage to roads in many areas, hence the state government has worked hard on this project. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that a clause of 5 years maintenance has been added in the ongoing road projects so that the roads remain in good condition for a long time. Besides, bright stripes, side markings, direction indicators and world class safety standards will be ensured on the roads. The Chief Minister said that he is fully committed to better serve the people of Punjab.

Under this, the Punjab government has associated many agencies including PMB, PWD, urban local bodies and public representatives in this state level comprehensive campaign. He said that for this, the state government has conducted a detailed survey of all the roads in Punjab and identified the roads to be repaired and upgraded. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that now the state government has set a target of constructing 44,920 km of roads at a total cost of Rs 16,209 crore by the end of next year. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the Chief Minister’s Flying Squad is constantly monitoring the quality of the roads and after receiving several complaints of use of substandard material, the contracts of some contractors have been cancelled. The Chief Minister warned that if any contractor is found doing shoddy work or any employee is involved in it, the strictest action will be taken against him. He said that the State Government is fully committed to ensure rational utilization of taxpayers’ money and no stone will be left unturned in this task.
