IPL 2026: Last year’s runner-up Punjab Kings team seems to be in great form this year too. The team has registered a spectacular victory in both its first matches. After Punjab’s spectacular victory in the high voltage match between CSK and Punjab held in Chepauk on Friday, team coach Ponting said that Punjab Kings are on the way to create a new identity in the IPL. Ponting further made it clear that this time the team has been prepared with a completely new approach – and its foundation has been laid on the “special talent” of the Indian players.

Before the Mega Auction 2025, the team had retained only Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh, which gave Ponting full opportunity to build a new team with players of his choice. The franchise, which came with a big budget of Rs 110.5 crore, strengthened the team by including star players like Shreyas Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh.
Ponting said his strategy was clear—build the team around young Indian batsmen and add a balance of Australian players to create a new and different identity. The glimpse of this strategy is visible on the field also. Young batsman Priyansh Arya proved the team’s thinking right by playing a quick inning of 39 runs in 11 balls against Chennai Super Kings.
At the same time, Yuzvendra Chahal is continuously proving effective in bowling. He bowled economically against Chennai and also took a wicket, while earlier he had also performed brilliantly against Gujarat Titans. Describing Chahal’s specialty, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh said that his flight is what makes him different. According to him, traditional leg spin is slowly dying out, but bowlers like Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav are still keeping this art alive. Overall, Punjab Kings have entered the field this season with the intention of not just winning matches, but also creating a new identity for themselves—and signs of that are now visible.
