This time, the Punjab government led by CM Bhagwant Mann has allocated Rs 979 crore for the development of sports in its budget. This is the largest allocation ever in the history of the state, which will promote sports culture in the state. The Mann government now plans to build modern playgrounds in around 13,000 villages in the state. Under this, complete renovation of rural stadiums will be done. In the first phase, construction work has already started in 3,083 villages. These sports stadiums will now become the new identity of the villages.

The government has also taken several other major initiatives to promote sports, such as the new sports policy, ‘Khedaan Watan Punjab Diyaan’ tournament and setting up of sports nurseries. The new sports policy 2023 aims at fair selection of sports talents and providing them the best facilities, under this policy, talented players are given equal opportunity to showcase their talent at the state and country level. ‘Khedaan Watan Punjab Diyan’ is an annual sports tournament which was started by the Hon’ble government, in its third edition (2024) around 5 lakh athletes participated in 37 sports. Parasports were also included in this. Along with this, the Hon’ble Government is setting up 1000 sports nurseries, in which world class coaching, sports material and facilities will be provided.

By removing the ban on heritage sports, the government has also introduced traditional heritage sports like bullock cart racing, dog racing and horse racing. Its objective is to revive the cultural identity of the state and connect the youth with its tradition.
