Punjab News: Continuing his campaign to interact with people at the grassroots level to promote rural development, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said here today that the objective of this initiative is to ensure world-class civic amenities in villages at par with cities.

While interacting with the people amidst applause, the Chief Minister said that the overall development of villages is the need of the hour, so that the all-round development of the state can be given more momentum. He said that the state government is already making every possible effort to ensure public welfare and accelerate the development of villages. He clarified that this massive work is not possible without the active cooperation of the common people.

Creating an emotional connect with the people, the Chief Minister said that the people and their elected representatives should regularly monitor the ongoing development works in the state, which will improve the quality of the works. He appealed to the people to extend full cooperation to the concrete efforts of the state government to accelerate the development of villages. The Chief Minister said that a large population of the state lives in villages, hence the government is giving top priority to rural development.

The Chief Minister stressed that the Punjab Government is fully committed to providing facilities to the rural people at par with the cities and no stone will be left unturned in this noble cause. He said that the sole objective of these activities is to prepare a clear roadmap for the development of the state, especially the rural areas.

Emphasizing on comprehensive development of rural areas, the Chief Minister said that the government has already approved several projects in this direction. He sought cooperation from the public in strengthening rural infrastructure to further accelerate the pace of development.

Talking to journalists, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the state government has no shortage of funds for the development of Punjab. He said that problems like garbage heaps, street lights, sewerage and all other problems would be resolved soon. The Chief Minister said that there has been unprecedented development in the state in the last four years and his government never complained of lack of funds. Unlike previous governments, which had trapped the state in a debt trap, the current government believes in debt repayment along with development.

Giving examples, he said that the government has brought the Electricity Board out of losses, has repaid the loans of sugar mills, Markfed and other institutions. Besides, old loans are also being managed better so that there is no hindrance in new development works. The Chief Minister said that the government has provided more than 58,000 jobs to the youth, constructed new school buildings and laid 43,000 kilometers of roads, which is the result of wise financial management.

The Chief Minister said that the Punjab Government is making concerted efforts to raise the standard of living of the people. He said that it was never heard before that students of the state were becoming pilots, but now the government has purchased seven aircraft for world class training. He said that the right to dream is not only for the rich but also for the common people, hence the government is providing benefits to all sections.

Appealing to the newly elected Zilla Parishad and Block Committee members, the Chief Minister said that elections are held for a few days, but after being elected, the responsibility of the representatives is to serve all sections of the people. He said that the representatives also represent those who did not vote for them, hence should work in a missionary spirit for the betterment of all.

Responding to another question, the Chief Minister said that the state government has adopted zero tolerance policy against corruption. He said that processes like property registration have now become quite simple and many services are available online. People now just have to go to the sub-registrar office for a photograph and the registration is completed in 15-20 minutes.

The Chief Minister said that online services have reduced corruption and people no longer have to visit RTO offices. He said that the roots of corruption had become deep under the patronage of the previous governments, but the present government is making continuous efforts to uproot them.

On the question of changing the name of MNREGA, the Chief Minister said that merely changing the name does not make any difference. He said that changing the name does not feed the poor, laborers need work. Giving an example, he said that changing the names of cities did not bring any major change in the lives of the common people.

Strongly condemning the withholding of funds by the Central Government, the Chief Minister said that it is against the spirit of the federal structure. The Punjab Government is fully committed to protecting the interests of the state and Punjabis.

The Chief Minister said that Mukhyamantri Swasthya Yojana will be started soon, under which 65 lakh families of the state will get cashless treatment up to Rs 10 lakh in government and private hospitals. He said that more public welfare schemes will be presented in the coming budget session.

Taking aim at Shiromani Akali Dal, the Chief Minister said that in their obsession with new technology they have deviated from their real issues. He said that Aam Aadmi Party is expanding across the country, while Akali Dal is shrinking. The Chief Minister said that due to its public-friendly and development-oriented policies, Aam Aadmi Party is getting support from every section of the society.
