Punjab Police Issues Look Out Circular Against Bikram Majithia
Amritsar, June 1, 2026 (Yes Punjab News):
The political and legal controversy surrounding senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia intensified on Monday after Punjab Police issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against him in connection with a case related to the alleged “attack” on Majitha police station and an attempt to secure the release of a detainee from police custody.
The issuance of the LOC effectively means that Majithia, who remains untraceable after registration of the FIR, would not be able to leave the country through official immigration channels.
The development came hours after Punjab Police conducted a major raid at Majithia’s Green Avenue residence in Amritsar in an attempt to arrest him. However, the police team returned empty-handed as the Akali leader was reportedly not present at his residence during the operation.
Heavy police deployment and elaborate security arrangements were made outside the residence during the raid.
According to police sources, an FIR has been registered against Majithia and several others over allegations that a group led by him stormed Majitha police station on Sunday and attempted to forcibly secure the release of Jobanjit Singh, who had been detained by police earlier in the day.
Jobanjit Singh is associated with the Kirti Kisan Union and had reportedly served as a polling agent of the Shiromani Akali Dal during the recently concluded municipal elections.
The controversy began after Jobanjit Singh was allegedly brought to Majitha police station on Sunday morning. Following his detention, members of the Kirti Kisan Union staged a protest outside the police station. Later, Majithia, accompanied by his supporters, also reached the police station and allegedly confronted police officials.
Punjab Police alleged that the crowd entered the police station premises and attempted to forcibly free the detainee from police custody, triggering serious security concerns and prompting senior officers to intervene.
However, Majithia has strongly denied the allegations. He claimed that Jobanjit Singh was not confined in the lock-up and was instead found inside the room of the Station House Officer (SHO).
Majithia’s counsel Damanbir Singh Sobti stated that the legal team had not yet been provided a copy of the FIR and had sought details from the Amritsar SSP.
“We still do not know under which sections the FIR has been registered, whether Bikram Majithia has been formally named, or what exact allegations have been leveled. The police are legally bound to disclose the grounds of arrest,” Sobti said.
The lawyer also reiterated Majithia’s stand that Jobanjit Singh was not rescued from police lock-up custody.
Sobti further claimed that he was unaware of Majithia’s current whereabouts.
Speaking to the media outside Majithia’s residence earlier in the day, SP Aditya Warrier confirmed that police teams had arrived to arrest Majithia and other accused persons named in the FIR.
Police sources said that 12 special teams had been constituted to trace and arrest all accused persons linked to the incident. Raids and search operations are reportedly underway at multiple locations across Punjab.
Investigators are also examining CCTV footage, digital evidence and other material collected from the police station and surrounding areas as part of the ongoing probe.
In a significant parallel development, Suhail Qasim Mir, who addressed a press conference regarding the registration of the case against Majithia and others, was transferred from the post of SSP Amritsar Rural just hours after the media briefing.
Political observers are linking Mir’s sudden transfer to alleged delays in registration of the FIR and the police’s inability to arrest Majithia despite extensive search operations.
Reacting sharply to the issuance of the Look Out Circular, SAD Chief Spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kaler termed the move a “police exercise aimed at playing to the gallery.”
Kaler said Majithia’s passport was already deposited with a court in connection with an earlier case and there was virtually no possibility of him leaving the country.
The police action comes amid heightened political tensions in Punjab following the recently concluded civic body elections. Akali leaders and Kirti Kisan Union members have alleged that Jobanjit Singh was detained in a fabricated case due to political vendetta linked to his role as an SAD polling agent during the municipal polls.
As of now, it remains unclear whether any arrests have been made among the other persons named in the FIR.
