Punjab: New initiative of Punjab – 11 ITIs will be opened in jails, prisoners will get new skills and new life – Keep an eye on every movement of media world.
11 ITIs will be built in the jails of Punjab, with the new initiative of Punjab Government, prisoners will get skill training and new life.
Punjab News: The Punjab and Haryana High Court, in collaboration with the Department of Prisons, Punjab and the Department of Technical Education and Industrial Training, Punjab, is launching a major reform initiative named “Improving Life Behind Bars: Real Change – A New Approach to Restorative Justice” at the Central Jail, Patiala on 6th December, 2025. This program will be inaugurated by the Honorable Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, in which Supreme Court judges, High Court judges and senior officials of the state will be present. The aim of this initiative is to convert the jails of Punjab into centers of learning and rehabilitation. For this, with the help of Punjab Skill Development Mission, 2,500 prisoners in all 24 jails will be given certified vocational training at the national level.

Under this initiative, 11 ITIs will be opened inside the jails which will offer NCVT-certified long-term courses in trades like welding, electrician, plumbing, sewing technology, cosmetology, COPA and bakery. Apart from this, NSQF-aligned short-term courses in tailoring, jute and bag making, bakery, plumbing, mushroom cultivation, computer hardware and other skills will also be offered. You will get training under national standards with certified faculty, modern workshops, ₹ 1,000 monthly stipend and NCVET/NSQF certification. A strong reintegration framework ensures post-release support through government ITIs, placement support through DBEE, access to MSME schemes, counseling and issuance of Good Conduct Certificate. Practical learning is strengthened through carpentry, sewing, welding, bakery and fabrication in prison factories.

Other reforms in Punjab prisons include opening of petrol pumps in nine prisons, sports and yoga programmes, Prison Inmate Calling System (PICS), Radio Ujala and platforms for creative expression. On the same day, Punjab State Legal Services Authority will also launch a month-long statewide anti-drug awareness campaign, “Youth Against Drugs”, which will be inaugurated by the Honorable Chief Justice of India. The campaign, which will run from 6 December 2025 to 6 January 2026, will mobilize communities and institutions to fight drug abuse through awareness, legal education and rehabilitation outreach. These initiatives demonstrate the High Court’s commitment to rehabilitative justice, respect and safe communities, helping prisoners transition from custody to competency and creating a drug-free society.
