Why is there fighting in Manipur?
Manipur witnessed violent clashes between two communities, the majority Meitei community and the minority Kukis, in May this year. At least 130 people have been killed and 400 injured in this violence so far. More than 60,000 people have been forced to flee their homes as the army, paramilitary forces and police struggle to stop the violence.
During these clashes, both the communities vandalized many places and also looted weapons from many police stations. Hundreds of churches and more than a dozen temples were also demolished and several villages were set on fire during the violent clashes.
Which two communities are fighting in Manipur?
Meitei, Kuki and Naga militias have fought each other for decades over conflicting homeland demands and religious differences, and all sides have clashed with Indian security forces. However, this recent fight is entirely between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
