Rahul Gandhi’s allegation – Modi ji is running a ‘one man show’, Congress will take to the streets against changing the name of MNREGA.

New Delhi, 27 December. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the decision to change the name of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was taken directly by the PMO and while doing so, Cabinet and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan was not consulted.

Ending MNREGA is an attack on the rights based concept.

In the same sequence, Rahul Gandhi said in the context of Congress starting ‘Save MNREGA Movement’ from January 5, 2026, ‘As Kharge ji has said, we will oppose it. We will fight this and I am confident that the entire opposition will be united against this action. Speaking to the media after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, he said, ‘MNREGA was not just a scheme, but it was a rights-based concept. Ending this scheme is an attack on this concept.

Ignoring Minister Shivraj Singh and Cabinet, PMO took the decision directly.

The Congress leader alleged that the central government’s move is an attack on the country’s federal structure and centralization of power and financial system. He said, ‘This decision has been taken without consulting the minister (Shivraj) and the cabinet and this decision was taken directly by the PMO. One man show is going on, Modi ji does whatever he wants.

It is noteworthy that the Parliament had approved the ‘Developed India-Ji Ram Ji Bill, 2025’ on December 18 amid the uproar of the opposition. After being given assent by President Draupadi Murmu, this Act has now replaced the 20 year old MNREGA.

Rahul Gandhi said, ‘This is an attack on the states of India because they are just snatching away the state’s money, the power to take decisions which belongs to the state. This is an attack on the infrastructure of those states because MNREGA was used to build infrastructure… So this is a huge attack on the states, on the poor people of this country.

The aim is to benefit big industrialists by snatching money from the poor.

He alleged that the purpose of weakening MNREGA is to benefit big industrialists by snatching money from the poor. He said, ‘This decision will cause huge loss to tribals, Dalits, OBCs, minorities and poor general class, while billionaires will get full benefit from it.’
