Rahul Gandhi’s announcement, “MNREGA has been abolished, now we will bring it back”
The opposition has opened its front after the VB Ji Ram Ji Bill was passed in both the Houses of Parliament by changing the form of MNREGA. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi Launching a major attack on the Centre, he said that the new law is neither reform nor development, but a conspiracy to eliminate the fundamental rights and demand-based guarantees of MNREGA. Rahul says that he will launch a movement across the country to withdraw this law.
During his visit to Germany, Rahul Gandhi wrote on Twitter on Friday that the Modi government “has ended 20 years of MNREGA in a single day.” According to Rahul, the G Ram Ji Law turns MNREGA into a ration scheme that will be controlled from Delhi. It weakens the rights of states and villages, eliminates workers’ bargaining power and will stifle rural development.
Rahul Gandhi said that MNREGA had given rural India an option – a way out of poverty, helplessness, migration and exploitation. Wages increased, working conditions improved and infrastructure was built in villages.
But the new law is an attack on the last line of defense for the rural poor. He clearly said, “We will form a nationwide front with workers, panchayats and states and fight to withdraw this law.”
The Congress leader alleged that the government passed the bill in a hurry, ignoring the opposition’s objection and demand for review. He says that this is an attempt to centralize power and suppress the voice of the poor.
On the other hand, there was protest in the Parliament premises also on the MGNREGA dispute. Trinamool Congress MPs sat on strike for 12 hours from late Thursday night to Friday afternoon. MP Sagarika Ghosh alleged that the government was adopting “bulldozer tactics” to get the law passed.
Referring to the Corona period, Rahul said that during the same period, MNREGA had saved crores of people from hunger and debt and women, Dalits, tribals and OBC communities got the most benefits.
He says that Ji Ram Ji will implement employment rationing and these classes will be the first to be excluded. It is clear that after the Rahul Gandhi attack and the opposition’s stance, the Ji Ram Ji Act has now become a big issue of political struggle and the fight is going to reach from the Parliament to the streets.
