Rahul Tewatia came out to bat with a thick bat and the umpire’s strictness changed the course of the game.
New Delhi . An interesting and slightly controversial atmosphere was created in a match of IPL 2026 when Rahul Tewatia came out to bat and the field umpire’s eyes were fixed on his bat. This finisher of Gujarat Titans was stopped by the umpire while playing against Punjab Kings and his bat was examined. During investigation, it was found that his bat did not conform to the prescribed standards, which is called an illegal bat in the language of cricket.
The umpire present on the field immediately tested the bat with the help of a bat gauge. This is a special device with which it is checked whether the bat fits within the prescribed thickness and width rules or not. When the bat could not pass this gauge, the umpire without any delay instructed Rahul Tewatia to change the bat. Tewatia also respected this decision and immediately ordered a new bat and continued the game.
Although during this time Tewatia tried to explain that due to the sticker on his bat he was not able to cross the gauge but the umpires did not give any relaxation under the rules. Now the technical checking in IPL has become very strict and any kind of irregularity is stopped immediately.
In fact, the testing of bats has been made more stringent since IPL 2025. Now the bat can be checked before the batsman enters the field and even in the middle of the match. The fourth umpire or on-field umpire can do this check at any time so that fairness is maintained in the game.
If we talk about the rules, then according to Marylebone Cricket Club i.e. MCC, the thickness of the bat should not be more than 67 mm and the thickness of the edges should remain within 40 mm. The same standards apply in international cricket and big tournaments like IPL.
Now the biggest question that arises is whether there is any punishment for using an illegal bat. The answer to this is a bit interesting. For the first time, if a player’s bat is found to be against the rules, he is simply asked to replace it and play continues. In this, neither penalty of runs is given nor is the player banned immediately.
But if a player repeatedly violates such rules, then action can be taken against him under the IPL Code of Conduct. In this, a fine of up to 50 percent of the player’s match fee can be imposed. That is, on the first mistake, there is a warning and a chance for correction, but for repeated mistakes, one may have to face financial penalty.
After this incident, it has once again become clear how important the role of technology and rules has become in modern cricket. Now players not only have to pay attention to their performance but also have to follow the rules of the equipment completely so that the fairness of the game is maintained and no unfair advantage can be taken.
