Rail fare increased, new charges applicable according to distance and train
Railway Fare Hike 2025: On the occasion of Christmas, Railways has given a big update to the passengers. The new railway fares have come into effect from midnight of 25th and 26th December. That means passengers who book tickets after this date will have to pay increased fare. However, tickets booked before December 26 will not be affected. Railways says that with this increase passengers will get better facilities.
How much has the fare increased in passenger trains?
According to the Railway Ministry, the fares of passenger trains have been increased by 1 paisa per kilometer. It is a matter of relief that no increase has been made on the journey of 215 kilometers.
- From 215 to 750 km: Increase of ₹5
- From 750 to 1250 km: Increase of ₹10
This means that there will not be much burden on short distance travelers.
What changed in Mail-Express trains?
If you travel by mail and express train, you will now have to pay 2 paise more per kilometer. For example, going from Delhi to Patna will cost you around ₹20 more. However, Railways says that this increase is very minor and this will provide better services to the passengers.
Which passengers will get relief?
Railways has clarified that there has been no change in the fares for those traveling on monthly pass (season ticket). Apart from this, fares have not been increased on some special routes also. In view of the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, the fares of some passenger trains running from Sealdah have been kept unchanged, especially in areas like Murshidabad, Malda and Beldanga.

How much will Railways benefit?
Indian Railways had earlier revised the fare on July 1, 2025, due to which additional earnings of about Rs 700 crore have been generated so far. With the implementation of new fares, about Rs 600 crore more is expected to be collected in the remaining months of the current financial year. This money will be spent on salary, security, maintenance and infrastructure improvement of railway employees.
