Where exactly was the fare increase?
The Railway has announced a new fare structure effective from December 26, 2025, with no fare increase for journeys under 215 km in Ordinary Class. There has been a marginal increase in fares for long-distance passengers. For a distance of more than 215 km, traveling in general class will cost 1 paise more per km. Non-AC coaches of mail and express trains and all AC classes will increase by 2 paise per kilometre. Railways gave an example and said that a non-AC journey of 500 km will cost only Rs 10 extra.
Who is exempt from rent hike?
Under the new system, there will be no increase in the fares of local trains (suburban services) and monthly season tickets (MST). Why was the fare increase?
Railway officials say the fares have been rationalized in view of the significant expansion of the railway network and operations in the last decade.
