Now will railways be more safe? Big decision for common families, what will change with Rail Tech Portal and e-RCT?
Railway Digital Claim: For crores of passengers of the country, Railways is not just a means of travel but also a lifeline related to employment, family and dreams. In such a situation, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has recently taken a big step by launching Rail Tech Portal and e-RCT. The government says that this will accelerate innovation in Railways and the claim process will become completely digital.
What is Rail Tech Portal and why is it special?
Rail Tech Portal aims to directly connect the day-to-day problems of Railways with tech companies, startups and research teams. Now innovators will be able to upload their solutions directly on the portal. Railways will select those ideas and test them as a pilot project. If the results are positive, they will be implemented on a larger scale. This can reduce the time taken to adopt new technology and decisions can be taken on the ground faster.
From AI to monitoring: which areas to focus on?
This initiative has focused on important areas like AI, track monitoring, fire alarm system in coaches, safety, energy saving and maintenance. Work was being done on these issues for a long time, but there was delay in implementing the solutions. Rail Tech Portal is being said to be a means to eliminate this gap.
Opportunity for startups, but with conditions
According to the government, through this platform innovators can get not only opportunities but also project based financial assistance. However, this is not a direct fund transfer, rather support will be provided based on the solution chosen. That is, this is not a subsidy scheme, but a platform to provide support as per need. Only those ideas will move forward which will meet the actual needs of the Railways and will be successful in the test.

What will be the impact on passengers?
Its impact will be indirectly visible on common passengers. If track monitoring and safety tech is successful, the risk of accidents can reduce. Fire or technical fault in the coach will be detected earlier. Better maintenance can also reduce the latency of trains. However, this change will be visible gradually.

Claim will be easier through e-RCT
The process of Railway Claims Tribunal has now been digitalized through e-RCT. Claim filing and tracking will be online. Passengers will have to visit offices less and the status of the case can be seen from mobile or computer. The government claims that this will increase transparency, but real change will be considered only when the speed of disposal of cases also increases. There have been many digital initiatives in the Railways in the past also. Now everyone’s eyes are on whether Rail Tech Portal and e-RCT will really prove to be a strong beginning of railway reforms or will it remain just another portal.
