Rain and defeat increased Pakistan’s tension, now only a miracle can get the semi-final ticket
After the defeat against England, Pakistan’s path in the Super-8 stage of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 became very difficult. After this defeat, Pakistan’s hope of reaching the semi-finals now depends not only on victory but also on the results of other teams. England has already secured a place in the last four from Group-2 with four points, while Pakistan has lagged behind in the points table.
It is very important to win against Sri Lanka
Pakistan now has only one match left in the Super-8, which will be played against Sri Lanka on 28 February at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Victory in this match is mandatory for Pakistan. If the team loses here or the match does not go in its favor then its journey in the tournament will end.
Pakistan’s previous match against New Zealand cricket team was canceled due to rain, due to which it got only one point. Pakistan’s position is weak with one point from two matches. Even with a win against Sri Lanka, it will be able to reach a maximum of three points, which will not directly ensure its qualification. In such a situation, the results of other matches will play a decisive role.
How can Pakistan enter the semi-finals?
The most favorable situation for Pakistan will be when New Zealand loses both its remaining matches. If Sri Lanka defeats New Zealand and England also defeats them, then New Zealand will remain on one point. After this, if Pakistan defeats Sri Lanka, it will get three points and can enter the semi-finals by finishing second in the group.
However, in another possible situation the points may be equal. If New Zealand wins one match and loses one, it will have three points, which will be equal to Pakistan’s possible points. In such a situation, the decision will be based on net run rate. This is why Pakistan will need not just to win, but to win by a big margin, so that its net run rate can improve.
If New Zealand wins both its matches then it will directly reach the semi-finals with England and Pakistan’s campaign will end. There is no provision of reserve day in the Super-8 stage. Therefore rain can also change the equation. Now there is only one goal for Pakistan to win against Sri Lanka at any cost and that too by an impressive margin.
