Rain caused havoc in Mumbai! 13 dead, schools and colleges closed, red alert of floods and landslides in many districts
Country. Continuous torrential rains in many parts of the state including Maharashtra’s capital Mumbai have completely disrupted life. Amid heavy waterlogging, flood-like situations and incidents of landslides, the Maharashtra government has decided to keep all schools and colleges of Mumbai closed on Tuesday as a precautionary measure. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, warning of heavy rain and strong winds.
Till now 13 people have died due to rain-
According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, 13 people have lost their lives so far in Maharashtra due to heavy rains and strong winds in the last two days, while 10 others have been injured. About 100 houses have been damaged and many families have been evacuated to safer places.
Record rain in many districts including Mumbai-
Lonavala recorded the highest rainfall of 625 mm in the last 48 hours. In the last 24 hours, 236 mm rainfall was recorded in Raigarh, 161 mm in Thane, 152 mm in Ratnagiri, 132 mm in Palghar and 100 to 161 mm rainfall was recorded in various areas of Mumbai.
Rivers in spate, danger of flood in many areas-
Due to continuous rains, many rivers of Maharashtra are flowing above the danger mark. The water level of Ulhas, Kalu, Pinjal, Amba, Savitri, Kundalika, Patalganga and Jagbudi rivers is continuously rising. Flood alert has been issued in many areas including Badlapur, Mohane and Jambhulpara.
Landslides and accidents increased the problems-
Six people died and one person was injured when a building collapsed on a slum in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area. Two people injured after part of building collapses in Thane. Two people died due to drowning in Palghar and Sindhudurg, while one person lost his life in a landslide in Satara.
30 houses were damaged in Sindhudurg due to strong winds. In view of the constant threat of landslides, a red alert has been issued for tourist places like Matheran, Lonavala, Khopoli and Lohagarh.
NDRF launched rescue operation-
Efforts are on to rescue four people trapped in a house due to landslide in Maval tehsil of Pune district. Whereas near Talegaon-DabhadeNational Disaster Response Force (NDRF) safely pulled out a bus carrying 25 passengers stuck in flood waters. Took.
Six members of a family, including a six-month-old infant, who were surrounded by flood waters in Raigad district, were rescued by boat to a safe place.
Impact on highways and traffic-
Traffic on Mumbai-Goa Highway, Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Khopoli Road was affected due to heavy rains and landslides. There were long traffic jams at many places, although the administration later restored traffic on most routes.
Alert of heavy rain in Gujarat also-
It is raining continuously in South Gujarat also. Kamrej in Surat recorded 154 mm rainfall, while Valsad, Vapi, Navsari and other districts also received torrential rains.
IMD has issued a warning of heavy to extremely heavy rain in Surat, Tapi, Dangs, Navsari, Valsad, Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Bharuch, Narmada and many districts of Saurashtra. Along with this, the possibility of strong winds at the speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour and thunderstorms has also been expressed.
The administration has appealed to the people to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from rivers, streams and landslide prone areas and follow the guidelines issued by the Meteorological Department.
