Raja Raghuvanshi murder case: Supreme Court cancels the bail of Sonam Raghuvanshi, orders to surrender in 3 weeks

New Delhi: Sonam Raghuvanshi, the wife of the accused in the murder case of Indore’s famous businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, has received a big legal setback from the apex court. The Supreme Court has ended the relief given to Sonam, canceled her bail and issued strict instructions to her to surrender within three weeks. Apart from this, the court has ordered to complete the trial of this sensitive case within the next 6 months.

Technical mistake became the basis for bail

This sad incident happened in May 2025, when Raja Raghuvanshi, a resident of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, had gone to Meghalaya for honeymoon with his wife Sonam after his marriage. Raja was murdered in the East Khasi Hills area, after which in June 2025, the police arrested his wife Sonam considering her to be the main conspirator of the murder.

In April 2026, the District and Sessions Court of East Khasi Hills had granted bail to Sonam on the technical grounds that there was a mistake in the typing of the section in the police arrest memo. Instead of the actual section of murder (103 BNS) ‘403 BNS’ was erroneously mentioned in the document. Later, Meghalaya High Court also upheld this bail order of the lower court.

Solicitor General’s arguments and Supreme Court’s strict stance

Challenging the High Court order, the Meghalaya government filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court. Justice M.M. Sundaresh and Justice P.B. Presenting the state government’s side before Varale’s bench, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that releasing an accused of such a serious crime on the basis of a minor clerical error (typographical error) in the arrest memo is wrong in law. He also expressed concern that being out on bail could influence the accused’s evidence.

Supreme Court canceled the bail

Considering the seriousness of the matter, the Supreme Court made it clear that bail cannot be maintained in heinous crime cases on the basis of any technical flaw. The bench has asked Sonam to surrender in 21 days. The court has also given relief that if the statements of witnesses and the trial process are not completed within 6 months, then the accused can apply for bail again.
