Raja Shivaji crosses Rs 60 crore at box office

Mumbai: Raja Shivaji, starring and directed by Riteish Deshmukh, continues its steady run at the box office and has now crossed the Rs 60 crore mark within nine days of release.

The historical drama, based on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, hit theatres on May 1 and opened to mixed reviews from critics. However, audience interest has remained strong, helping the film maintain stable collections despite competition from other releases.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film witnessed a notable jump in earnings on day nine.

Riteish reacts to budget discussions

In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Riteish Deshmukh addressed ongoing discussions around the reported budget of Raja Shivaji.

Several reports had claimed that the Marathi historical drama was mounted on a budget of nearly Rs 100 crore.

Responding to the speculation, the actor-filmmaker said that only the producers know the actual figures and added that conversations around budgets and actor fees have become unnecessarily important in film culture.

Riteish said audiences should focus more on enjoying films rather than constantly discussing finances and numbers.

Recalling his childhood memories of watching Sholay, he mentioned that viewers earlier never worried about the budget of movies starring legends like Amitabh Bachchan.

Star-studded cast adds to film’s appeal

Apart from Riteish Deshmukh playing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the film also stars Genelia Deshmukh as Saibai Bhonsale.

The project features a large ensemble cast including Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan, Bhagyashree, Vidya Balan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar and Amole Gupte in important roles.

The screenplay has been written by Riteish Deshmukh along with Ajit Wadekar and Sandeep Patil.

Historical dramas continue attracting audiences

Raja Shivaji’s performance once again highlights the growing audience interest in large-scale historical dramas rooted in Indian history and culture.

The film’s strong collections, especially in Maharashtra and key metro cities, indicate sustained public curiosity around stories based on iconic historical personalities.

Trade analysts believe the film could continue its positive run over the coming weeks if weekend momentum remains steady.
