Historical importance of Ajmer Dargah and Badi Degh

This Dargah of Ajmer is known as an important center of Sufi tradition not only in India but throughout the world. The “Badi Degh” located here also has historical importance.

According to history, this huge cauldron was gifted to the Dargah by Mughal Emperor Akbar after the conquest of Chittorgarh. Akbar himself reached the Dargah on foot and offered Aqeedat at the shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chishti.

Features of Badi Deg and Langar Tradition

This cauldron is considered to be one of the largest cauldrons in India, in which about 80 maunds (about 3200 kg) of langar can be prepared at one time.

In this, special langar made of rice, milk, dry fruits and sugar is prepared, which is distributed among the devotees. According to tradition, non-vegetarian food is never cooked in this cauldron.

On special occasions like Urs, langar is prepared on a large scale in this cauldron, while on normal days smaller cauldrons are used.

Questions raised on security and management

Although there was no serious damage in this incident, it has definitely raised questions on the security arrangements of the Dargah complex. Experts believe that there is a need to further strengthen security and crowd control at such sensitive religious places.
