What is the matter?
This whole story starts from 2010. Rajpal Yadav had taken a loan of about Rs 5 crore from a private company to make his directorial debut film ‘Ata Pata Lapata’. The film was released in 2012, but did not do well at the box office. The result was that there was difficulty in repaying the loan. The company issued cheques, but they bounced. Gradually this amount increased to about Rs 9 crore with interest and legal expenses. This case was prosecuted under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, which gives strict punishment for check bounce.
Actor granted interim bail
In 2018, a magistrate court convicted Rajpal Yadav and sentenced him to 6 months’ imprisonment. After several appeals the matter reached Delhi High Court. In the beginning of February 2026, the High Court ordered him to surrender, after which he surrendered in Tihar Jail on 5 February. He stayed in jail for about 12 days. During this time many people from Bollywood stood with him, like Sonu Sood and other people from the industry. With his help some money was raised. On 16 February 2026, Delhi High Court granted him interim bail. The main condition of the bail was that he would have to deposit Rs 1.5 crore in the complainant’s account. The court also said that the marriage of Rajpal Yadav’s niece is going to take place on February 19 in Shahjahanpur, hence he is being given this relief due to family reasons. The bail is valid till March 18, 2026, and during this time he will have to appear in the court or appear virtually.

He also had to give a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and one surety. Passport also had to be surrendered. Rajpal Yadav spoke to the media after being released from jail. He thanked the entire country and the people of the film industry, who stood by him and helped him. He said that the truth will come out in the court and he is ready to answer every question. Interestingly, he also talked about the facilities of the jail. He said that there are no smoking rooms in jails, whereas there are at railway stations and airports. He demanded reforms in jail and said that some prisoners should get a second chance, like the lifeline given in Kaun Banega Crorepati. After his release, he went straight to his native village Shahjahanpur and attended his niece’s mehendi ceremony.
