‘Flight tickets cannot be made affordable throughout the year’… Aviation Minister spoke in Parliament, told the real compulsion
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Spoke in Lok Sabha: If you also travel by air and are often worried about expensive tickets, then the government has made a big and clear statement regarding this in the Parliament. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu made it clear in the Lok Sabha on Friday that it is not practical for the government to set a maximum limit on air fares or control them throughout the year. He said that for the aviation sector to fly high, it is very important to promote the policy of de-regulation i.e. open market.
Naidu argued in the House that countries across the world that have achieved extraordinary growth in air traffic have all kept their markets deregulated. When the market is open, more companies come and mutual cooperation increases. Due to this the natural law of demand and supply works. The Minister believes that by freeing up the dynamics of a de-regulated market, it is the common consumers who ultimately benefit the most.
Why do prices increase during festivals?
Responding to a private member’s bill seeking to control air fares, Naidu said increase in ticket prices during the festive season is a natural phenomenon. If we really want to grow the civil aviation sector, the first and foremost condition is to keep it de-regulated so that more companies can enter the market. However, he also clarified that this does not mean at all that the airline companies have been given complete freedom to act arbitrarily.

Government will not remain silent if looting occurs
The minister clarified that even though the market is open, the existing Aircraft Act gives full powers to the central government to intervene in exceptional circumstances. Whenever there is apprehension of misuse, the government will intervene. He reminded that recently when there was a huge surge in fares due to cancellation of a large number of flights, the government had immediately intervened calling it opportunistic. The government had imposed fare slabs to prevent airlines from charging excessively high prices.
