Hindus protest in Bangladesh: ‘Jai Shri Ram’ echoes in Dhaka; slogans, people took to the streets
: : Political and social debate has once again intensified in Bangladesh regarding issues related to minority community. Thousands of Hindu community members protested in the capital Dhaka on Friday against the alleged desecration of the image of Lord Ram and the halting of a proposed giant Ram statue project.
Torch procession taken out in Dhaka
On the call of Hindu organisations, a large number of people gathered in Shahbagh area of Dhaka. The protesters took out a torch procession and raised slogans demanding various demands. After this, the protesters marched to the National Press Club, where a human chain was formed and protest was registered.
What is the reason for the dispute?
The protesters alleged that the image of Lord Ram was desecrated during a demonstration held in Gaibandha area earlier this month. He says that despite the complaint being filed in the case, the accused have not been arrested yet, due to which resentment has increased in the community.
Why is Ram Murti project in discussion?
An 81-feet tall statue of Lord Ram was proposed to be constructed in a temple complex in the Palashbari area of Gaibandha district in northern Bangladesh. People associated with the project claim that the construction work has been stopped due to protests and alleged threats. Large statues of Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva are also proposed in this project.
Ultimatum given to the government
The Hindu organization has demanded the government to arrest the accused in the alleged insult case and restart the construction work of the statue. Hindu organizations have warned that if action is not taken within the stipulated time frame, the nationwide agitation will be intensified.

After this incident, discussion has started again regarding the security and rights of religious minorities in Bangladesh. Various social and religious organizations say that the concerns of the minority community need to be addressed seriously so that social harmony and trust can be maintained.
