One such tragedy happened with former India cricketer Raman Lamba, who lost his life just because of a small mistake. Born on 2 January 1960 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, Raman Lamba was among the rising stars of Indian cricket. If he had worn a helmet while fielding on the Dhaka ground, perhaps he would have been among us today.

Raman Lamba made his international debut on 7 September 1986 in the ODI match played against Australia in Jaipur. In his very first match, he played a brilliant inning of 64 runs and India won the match by seven wickets. In his career, Lamba played a total of 32 ODI matches, in which he scored 783 runs. Apart from this, he also represented India in four test matches. His record in first-class cricket was extremely impressive. He scored 8,776 runs in 121 matches.

Died while playing club cricket in Dhaka

Raman Lamba was playing club cricket in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. He had entered the field on behalf of Abahani Krida Chakra, where they were competing against Mohammedan Sporting Club. During this match, he lost his life after being hit by a ball while fielding. This accident left the entire cricket world in deep shock.

Raman Lamba married an Irish girl

Raman Lamba also played for Ireland four times as an overseas professional in the 90s. Meanwhile, in the month of September, he married Irish girl Kim. In an interview given in 2014, Kim had told that both of them met completely by chance. Their eyes met in a crowded room and Raman came straight to them and started talking. According to Kim, it was love at first sight. Raman had said in the very first meeting that he knew that Kim would be his life partner.

Raman Lamba’s popularity was like a film star

During that period, two young players in the Indian team, Mohammad Azharuddin and Raman Lamba, were especially in the news. His confident style on the field, excellent fielding and aggressive batting gave him a distinct identity. Off the field, his personality was so attractive that anyone who did not know him would mistake him for a film star. Perhaps this was the reason why Raman Lamba’s popularity in the 80s and 90s was no less than that of any Bollywood star.
