Ramayana India rights reportedly sold to Dharma for Rs 250 crore

Mumbai: Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash, has reportedly secured another major milestone ahead of its theatrical release. According to reports, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions has acquired the domestic distribution rights for director Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious mythological epic in a deal valued at Rs 250 crore.

The reported agreement comes after Warner Bros. Pictures was announced as the international distributor for the two-part film, giving the project strong distribution support in both Indian and overseas markets.

Dharma Productions reportedly bags India distribution rights

According to a report by Variety India, producer Namit Malhotra showcased an edited 30-minute version of Ramayana to several studios during the distribution process.

The footage reportedly highlighted the film’s large-scale production, visual effects and cinematic scale, attracting interest from multiple distributors.

The report claims Dharma Productions emerged as the successful bidder after negotiations, securing the India theatrical distribution rights for around Rs 250 crore.

Initial discussions were reportedly valued at nearly Rs 500 crore before both parties finalised the agreement at the revised amount.

However, the reported deal has not yet been officially confirmed by the filmmakers or Dharma Productions.

Warner Bros. to handle overseas release

Earlier, the makers announced that Warner Bros. Pictures would distribute Ramayana across international markets.

With Dharma Productions reportedly handling the domestic release and Warner Bros. managing overseas distribution, the film is expected to receive one of the widest theatrical releases for an Indian production.

The dual distribution strategy reflects the makers’ ambitions of reaching audiences both in India and across global markets.

The collaboration between two internationally acclaimed composers has generated considerable excitement among cinema lovers and music enthusiasts ahead of the film’s release.

Two-part saga planned for Diwali releases

Ramayana has been conceived as a two-part cinematic franchise.

The first instalment is scheduled to release in theatres on November 8, 2026, coinciding with the Diwali festival.

The second part is expected to arrive during the Diwali 2027 festive season, completing the epic adaptation.

The film is among the most anticipated Indian releases of the coming years, with audiences eagerly awaiting its visual spectacle, star cast and retelling of the ancient epic.

High expectations ahead of release

With reported domestic distribution worth Rs 250 crore, international backing from Warner Bros. and one of the biggest ensembles assembled for an Indian film, Ramayana is shaping up to be one of the largest cinematic projects in the country.
