Ranveer Singh in legal trouble as complaint filed over mimicking ‘Kantara’ scene- The Week
A police complaint has been lodged against actor Ranveer Singh for “illegal and offensive actions” after he recreated a scene from Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1 at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28..
The complaint was registered at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru by a city lawyer identified as Prashanth Metal, who practises at the Karnataka High Court. He alleged that the Bollywood star’s actions hurt religious sentiments by making disrespectful remarks about Ullalthi Daiva.
“I watched Kantara Chapter 1 in theatres, and Rishab, it was an outstanding performance, especially when the female ghost enters your body – that shot was amazing,” Singh said
The charges include Bharat Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 299, 302, and 196. The complainant alleged that Ranveer referred to the Daiva as a “demon” and a “female ghost”, which has hurt the sentiments of “millions of Hindus, particularly the Tulu-speaking community of Karnataka.”
Earlier, a video that has since gone viral showed Rishab Shetty gesturing “no” with his finger after Ranveer mimicked the actor-director’s daiva scene.
On Tuesday, Ranveer issued an apology on his Instagram Story, saying his intention was to highlight Rishab’s incredible performance in Kantara Chapter 1.
“Actor to actor, I know how much it takes to perform that particular scene the way he did, for which he has my utmost admiration. I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition, and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise,” Ranveer posted.
