Rashmika’s ‘The Girlfriend’ making waves in Pakistan: Number 1 in Netflix Top 10, superhit across the border despite being a flop in India

New Delhi: Not Hollywood blockbusters or Bollywood biggies, but a Telugu romantic drama is dominating Netflix in Pakistan. According to the data of December 21, Rashmika Mandanna starrer ‘The Girlfriend’ continues to hold the top position in Pakistan’s trending charts. This film is being liked very much by the audience there.

This psychological drama is originally made in Telugu, starring Dhekshit Shetty and Anu Emmanuel in the lead roles along with Rashmika Mandanna. The film is also available in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam dubbing. Directed by Rahul Ravindran, the film released in theaters on November 7 and received positive response from the audience. After this, streaming started on Netflix from December 5, where it is also proving to be a hit on OTT.

‘The Girlfriend’ earned more than Rs 29 crore worldwide at the box office. In India it was around 22 crores, while more than 7 crores came from overseas. The collection was Rs 11 crore in the first week and more than Rs 6 crore in the second. Despite its average performance in India, its popularity in Pakistan is surprising.

The story of the film revolves around Bhuma Devi (Rashmika Mandanna), who comes to Hyderabad to pursue MA in Literature. After meeting Vikram (Dhikshit Shetty) in college, she falls in love, but the relationship soon turns toxic. Vikram’s controlling nature affects Bhuma’s health and life. The film raises the serious issue of toxic relationships.

Produced by Dheeraj Mogilneni and Vidya Koppinen, the film featured Rao Ramesh, Rohini and Rahul Ravindran himself in important roles. Rashmika’s performance has received special praise. This is the latest example of the popularity of Indian content in Pakistan, where many Bollywood films are also making it to the top list.
