Ratan Tata Health Update: Tata Group Chairman Emeritus hospitalised, says report

Mumbai: The health of Ratan Tata, Tata Group and Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus and a stalwart of Indian industry, who went in for a routine checkup recently, may have taken a turn for the worse. Tata, who checked into a hospital recently, ruled out any critical illness on his social media handle earlier this week. However, since then his condition may have turned critical, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Ratan Tata oversaw the return of Air India

Ratan Tata in a message on social media welcomed Air India back to the Tata Group. The air carrier was founded by his predecessor J R D Tata.

Andhra Pradesh HRD minister Nara Lokesh announced that TCS will set up a facility in the state that will house 10,000 employees. TCS was listed on the exchanges in 2004 on Ratan Tata’s watch.

How Ratan Tata turned the tables on Ford Motors

The Tata Group chairman emeritus had once contemplated selling of the loss-making Tata Motors to Ford Motors US. The latter reportedly humiliated the team led by Tata in Detroit, US,  by asking them why they were out of their depth being in the automobile business. Ford added insult to injury that they would be doing the Tatas a favour by taking the company off their hands. That sale did not materialise, but Ratan Tata did purchase Jaguar Land Rover off Ford Motors’ hands after the 2008 financial crisis. The head of Ford Motors called it a ‘big favour’.

Tata Group succession plan

The 86-year-old who is unmarried and without children has a succession plan. He is likely to be succeeded by his half-brother Noel Tata, who in turn has 3 children, namely, Maya, Neville and Leah.

Ratan Tata’s love for animals

Ratan Tata is passionate about animals, especially dogs. In July, he inaugurated the Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital.

‘No cause for concern’: What Ratan Tata said on October 7

Ratan Tata had cited health checkups for age-related medical conditions as the reason behind his admission into a hospital on October 7, 2024. He played down any concerns by stating that he remained in good spirits. He asked the media to avoid spreading misinformation.

Tata, who is single, has no issue and currently bides his time as an investor philanthropist and dog lover. A Cornell graduate, Ratan Tata went on to join the Tata Group and eventually succeeded J R D Tata as the Tata Group chairman. After giving up the reins to Cyrus Mistry, Ratan Tata returned to take charge following Mistry’s ouster over alleged mishandling of the group.

Since then, Ratan Tata has retired to assume the post of Tata Group and Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus, and his protege N Chandrasekaran has taken over as chairman of Tata Group and Tata Sons.
