Central Govt Now under this scheme it is looking to transfer food entitlement from family-based system to individual-based system. The government has invited suggestions and objections from the public till July 13 on the “National Food Security (Amendment) Bill, 2026” framed for this purpose.
What is the current system?
As per the current norms, the poorest families covered under Antyodaya Anna Yojana are getting 35 kg of food grains per month. What will change in the new proposal?
The government has proposed that AAY beneficiaries will get 7 kg of food grains per person per month. However, the ceiling will remain at 35 kg per family. For example, a family of two members will get 14 kg of grain, while a family of five or more will continue to get up to 35 kg of grain. This is being done to make the distribution of foodgrains more balanced and fair according to the size of the family.
Large families will benefit directly
According to experts, under the current system, large families get comparatively less benefit. When the new proposal comes into effect, grain distribution will be based on the number of family members, which will provide better food security to needy families.
What is the purpose of government?
The central government says the reform is part of a broader strategy to strengthen food and nutrition security under a “human life cycle approach”. As per the basic objective of the National Food Security Act, it aims to provide adequate quality food to the poor and needy. At present, rice and wheat are provided free of charge to both Antyodaya Anna Yojana and priority families. Once implemented, the proposed changes will be seen as a significant step towards making the food distribution system more equitable and need-based.
