Government Cash Assistance Scheme: Before the upcoming festivals, the state government has shared a very good news for the general public and especially the workers. Under this new scheme of the government, financial assistance of Rs 5,000 will be provided directly to the eligible beneficiaries. To avail this benefit, citizens have been advised to keep their ration card and other important documents updated. This initiative is being started to double the joy of festivals and to support the economically weaker sections.
History of Pongal Gifts and Cash
The tradition of giving gifts to ration card holders on the occasion of Pongal is quite old in Tamil Nadu. In the year 2021, during the AIADMK rule, a cash amount of Rs 2,500 was given along with the Pongal package, which was the largest amount till that time. After this, Rs 1,000 cash started being given during the DMK government. However, on the last Pongal, only rice, sugar and sugarcane were given, which was widely criticized. Now in view of the elections to be held next year, the government is once again considering giving a huge amount of cash.
Proposal and financial position of senior ministers
Senior ministers of the state, after discussing with the officials, have requested to provide Rs 5,000 to all the family card holders. However, the government also faces some financial challenges, as the ongoing monthly payment schemes for women have put pressure on the budget. For this reason, there are speculations that the government may give Rs 3,000 in cash to all card holders, while Rs 5,000 is being demanded for special sections like construction workers. Apart from cash, this package will also include whole sugarcane and grains.
Workers’ demonstration and demand of Rs 5,000
Recently a major protest was organized by the Construction Workers Union (CITU) in Thoothukudi. Through this demonstration, a demand was made from the Labor Welfare Board that at least Rs 5,000 should be given to the construction workers as Pongal festival package. The Sangh says that in this era of inflation, this much amount is very necessary to celebrate the festival. The protesters raised slogans regarding their demands, after which serious consideration is being given to increasing this amount at the administration and government level.

Why is it important to keep documents updated?
The government has clarified that only those whose documents are completely correct will get the benefit of the scheme. It is mandatory to update Aadhaar linking, bank account information and family details in the ration card. If there is any error in your card, get it rectified immediately so that the relief amount reaches your account without any interruption. The government may officially announce this cash amount in the coming weeks, which will provide financial help to millions of families.
