Ravi Shastri praised Sanju Samson, said – he is a ‘genuine match winner’ for Team India
Former Indian cricketer and former head coach of Team India Ravi Shastri has praised Sanju Samson after his brilliant innings against England in the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Shastri described Samson as Team India’s “genuine match winner” and said that the biggest reasons for his recent success are his better shot selection, consistency and mental strength.
According to the official website of ICC, Ravi Shastri while talking in ‘The ICC Review’ said that Sanju Samson has the ability to play all types of shots, but earlier sometimes due to lack of concentration he was not able to play big innings. Now he has brought consistency in his batting and has also become mentally strong.
It is noteworthy that Sanju Samson did not get initial selection in the team at the beginning of the T20 World Cup. After poor performance in the home series against New Zealand, the team management had given place to Ishan Kishan as opener and Rinku Singh in the playing eleven. However, later Samson made a brilliant comeback and won the Player of the Match title in two consecutive matches and played an important role in taking Team India to the finals.
In the semi-final match played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Sanju Samson played an explosive inning of 89 runs in just 42 balls against England. During this, he hit seven sixes and many brilliant fours. His innings laid the foundation of India’s big victory. Earlier, he had taken India to the semi-finals by scoring unbeaten 97 runs in the important Super-8 match against West Indies.
Ravi Shastri said that Samson is only 31 years old and he has the ability to change the course of the match. He advised the team management to maintain confidence in Samson and give him a chance to play freely. According to Shastri, when Samson bats, class, touch and tremendous strength are clearly visible in his batting.
In the semi-final match, India, batting first, scored 253 runs at the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs. Apart from Sanju Samson’s brilliant inning of 89 runs, Shivam Dubey contributed 43 runs, Ishan Kishan contributed 39 runs, Hardik Pandya contributed 27 runs and Tilak Verma contributed 21 runs.
England gave a tough fight while chasing the target. Thanks to Jacob Bethel’s brilliant century, England remained in the match for a long time, but in the end Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant bowling turned the match towards India. India won this match by seven runs and secured its place in the final of T20 World Cup 2026.
