When to seek help for mental health

Ashwin has always been considered a mastermind for his bowling. But, there came a time in his life when he had to seek help for mental health. He revealed that he was in a “dark space” i.e. a difficult period for about 4-5 years.

During a conversation on YouTube channel 'Cric It with Badri' (video posted on November 21, 2023), the veteran spinner spoke about his mental health battle. He said, “I don't want to be diplomatic, but from 2019 to the next 4-5 years, I lived through very difficult times. I also sought professional help for mental health.” During this period, he understood how important it is to take care of mental health.

In recent years, many cricketers have been seen talking openly about their mental health. In the same conversation, Ashwin told that he was preparing for life after cricket for the last five years. He had said, “The day I don't get inspiration, the day I don't feel like bowling or batting after waking up in the morning, I will leave cricket immediately.”

Indian captain Rohit Sharma also said, “Ashwin felt that if the team does not need him right now, then it is the right time to say goodbye to the game.”
