Ravichandran Ashwin retired from international cricket, father's statement created a stir
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said goodbye to international cricket on Wednesday. Ashwin took this decision during the Test series against Australia and immediately returned to his home. Ashwin looked emotional after retirement.
On Thursday, Ashwin's father Ravichandran made a shocking statement regarding his retirement, in which he indicated that Ashwin may have taken this decision due to feeling humiliated. His statement sparked debate on social media. However, Ashwin appealed not to make much of his father's statement and leave him alone.
Father's statement and stir on social media
Speaking to CNN News18, Ravichandran said:
“I also came to know only at the last moment. There could be many reasons for his sudden retirement. Only Ashwin knows the real reason, maybe insult could be one of them.”
After this statement of the father, there was a stir on social media.
- Responding to this statement, Ashwin tweeted:
“My father is not made to talk to the media. I request everyone to forgive him and leave him alone.”
Controversy behind retirement
Ashwin has taken 537 Test wickets for India and is counted among the most successful off-spinners in the world.
- Recently, he was repeatedly left out of the playing eleven in the Test series against Australia.
- Perth Test: Washington Sundar was selected in place of Ashwin.
- Gaba Test: Ashwin was once again left out and Ravindra Jadeja was given a chance.
Due to this the discussions regarding Ashwin's selection became heated.
Father's statement: “There is a limit to bear insult”
Ravichandran said that the family was expecting Ashwin's retirement, but the sudden move was shocking.
He said:
“The sudden change surprised us. However, we were expecting it because the insults were coming. How long could he tolerate all those things? Perhaps he might have taken this decision himself.”
The father also said that Ashwin's decision to walk away from international cricket was a personal decision.
