RBI is strict regarding digital fraud, changed rules, now customers will get this facility

Digital transactions are expanding rapidly across the world. Along with this, cases of fraud are also increasing. Keeping this in mind, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has taken a big step. Changes have been made in the rules related to accountability of customers in digital transactions. Compensation facility will be provided to customers who are victims of digital fraud.

Due to this, RBI has released draft guidelines on its official website. On which public suggestions have also been sought till April 6, 2026. The new rules have not been implemented yet.

It may be released on or after July 1 after feedback received from stakeholders. Its purpose is to ensure security for customers. The new rules will be applied to commercial banks. Small finance banks, payment banks and regional rural banks will not be included in this.

How much compensation will you get?

Under the proposal, the major part of the compensation will be borne by the RBI. Whereas the customer’s bank and beneficiary bank will also contribute in this. For example, if a customer suffers a loss of Rs 29,412 due to digital fraud, then RBI itself will make 65% payment. The bank and the beneficiary bank will contribute 10% each. If the loss is between Rs 29,412 to Rs 50,000, 85% compensation will be given, which will be limited to Rs 25,000.

Know these important things

This change will be applicable to transactions done through mobile banking/internet banking/debit card/credit card and ATM. If the customer himself makes the payment by entering OTP or PIN or password or card details, it will be considered as an authorized transaction. The bank will not take responsibility for this. The bank will also not take responsibility for fraud committed through third parties. If someone fraudulently obtains customer information or commits fraud by luring, then such cases will be considered as fraud transactions.

Banks will ensure 24×7 facility for redressal of complaints. Banks will have to send SMS and email alerts for transactions of Rs 500 or more. A system will have to be prepared to handle complaints. For compensation, customers will have to lodge a complaint on the National Cyber ​​Crime Portal within 5 days of the fraud.
