Delhi Capitals slipped in the playoff race after defeat by RCB, how much hope is left in IPL 2026?
Delhi: The shocking defeat by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has taken the race for playoff qualification in the current season of IPL to a critical juncture for Delhi Capitals (DC). Rajat Patidar’s team not only defeated them by 9 wickets, but gave such a blow to Capitals’ batting by bowling them out for 75 runs that it became a bigger discussion than RCB’s win in just 6.3 overs, Delhi Capitals’ 5th defeat in this season. The car went off the rails after spectacular wins over Lucknow and Mumbai Indians at the beginning of the season. Chennai lost big matches to Gujarat Titans, Hyderabad, Punjab Kings and RCB and this has spoiled their chances of playoff qualification.

The equation is that their record in the matches played till April 28 is 3 wins and 5 losses in 8 matches and is number 7 with only 6 points. So what’s next for them? Although the trend of ups and downs will continue in mathematics, but according to a simple calculation, it is now necessary to win at least 5 out of the remaining 6 matches of this season. These matches are from Chennai, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Indications are that their biggest clashes in the race for playoff qualification will be with Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai.
In such a situation, while on one hand the Capitals would not want any of these teams to cross the 16-point mark in the group stage, on the other hand they would also like to win the match themselves. It would not be a surprise if the fourth team for the playoffs is decided on the basis of net run rate. In this case, NRR of -1.060 for Delhi Capitals is a sign of trouble ahead for them as they will have to try to improve it at the same time.
History is also not supporting Delhi Capitals. They and Punjab Kings are the two biggest and oldest teams to never have an IPL trophy in their cabinet but while the Kings are well on their way to changing this record, the Capitals have only gone down since Axar Patel became the captain. Last qualified for the playoffs in 2021 (played second qualifier).
So in this whole scenario, the team is in trouble not only on the ground but also outside the ground and in such a situation, they have no other option but to raise the level of their game further. Now either break under pressure or give a new tonic to your efforts, try better because now there is nothing much left to lose. Take confidence from the fact that you had a good start to the tournament. The team is almost the same so why can’t they manage?
Two days after scoring his highest score in the IPL, he recorded his third lowest score in the match against RCB at the Arun Jaitley Stadium (only the second IPL team to lose 6 wickets in the powerplay in a non-rain-affected match), so the blame will be squarely on his own poor performance. After two consecutive wins, only one win in their next 6 matches forces one to look within the team. Need to start playing some positive cricket.
Incidentally, something similar had happened in the previous season also. Delhi Capitals then started with four consecutive wins but won only 3 of their next 10 matches and ultimately finished at number 5 and missed the playoffs. There is still a chance to change that history this time. The next match is against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on May 1 and this will reveal what is going on in the team camp itself.
So what should Delhi Capitals do now? Let us see the formula for the same:
* Without any delay, give a chance to Prithvi Shaw and Abhishek Porel in your playing eleven. When the team is falling apart then why are these two on the bench?
* There is nothing to be gained by calling such a poor game of captain Akshar Patel ‘bad luck’. Encourage the team to play positively. There is even talk of him taking the captaincy in the middle of the season, but it does not seem that he will do anything like this in the middle of the season.

* If Sameer Rizvi is out of form, then sit on the bench and Ashutosh Sharma should play in his place.
* Batting coach to be changed at the end of the season: Start thinking about it now.
Will Delhi Capitals management take such big decisions?
