Kolkata, May 1. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has decided to conduct re-polling on Saturday (May 2) in 15 booths of two major assembly constituencies of West Bengal. This step has been taken after examining polling station-wise reports and complaints at the district level. All the booths come under South 24 Parganas district.

According to the Election Commission, re-voting will be held at 11 booths of Magrahat West assembly constituency of South 24 Parganas district. Apart from this, re-voting will also be held in four booths of Diamond Harbor assembly constituency in view of huge complaints.

It is noteworthy that after the second and final phase of voting in the state on April 29, the Election Commission had received complaints of rigging at 77 booths in four assembly constituencies of South 24 Parganas. Of these, 32 complaints were received from Falta, 29 from Diamond Harbour, 13 from Magrahat and three from Baj-Baj. The Election Commission said that this decision has been taken on the basis of complaints and scrutiny of rigging during voting, so that the fairness of the elections is maintained.
The Election Commission took this decision on the basis of the reports of returning officers and observers of Magrahat West and Diamond Harbor assembly constituencies. In this sequence, the EC has declared the voting held at these booths on 29 April 2026 as void under Section 58(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. According to the Commission, fresh voting will be conducted at the respective polling stations on May 2, 2026 from 7 am to 6 pm.
The letter addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal said, ‘I am directed to state that the Commission, on the basis of reports received from the concerned Returning Officers and Observers of 142-Magrahat West AC and 143-Diamond Harbor AC, in relation to the voting held on April 29 for the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal, 2026, under sub-section (2) of Section 58 of the ‘Representation of the People Act, 1951’, said the letter addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal said. “It is hereby declared that the voting held at the selected polling stations on 29th April for the above mentioned election is invalid.”
Ongoing investigation into complaints received from Falta assembly constituency
Along with the announcement of repolling at 15 booths, the Election Commission’s eyes are also on other areas. The Election Commission said that the reports of complaints related to 144-Falta assembly constituency are still awaited. After receiving the report from Falta, the situation there too will become clear whether there is a need for re-polling at any other booth. Election Commission teams are continuously reviewing the complaints coming from the districts and reports from the polling stations.
