Can Gio is around 50 km from downtown HCMC. Before HCMC’s merger with Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Binh Duong, it was the only part of the city with a natural coastline.

The district is known for its fresh air and rich biodiversity, and is often described as the city’s “green lung.”

The launch of the race reflects a global trend of nature-based running events. A 2019 study on motivations for joining small and medium-sized marathons in Thailand found that runners often took part in search of peace and mental healing. This demand is even more evident at races held near forests or the sea.

Participants will also have a chance to run through Vinhomes Green Paradise Can Gio, a 2,870-hectare project positioned as an ecological coastal mega-urban area combining resort, commercial and tourism functions under ESG++ standards.

Organizers said operations are being planned to optimize the experience for a field of 5,000 runners. Transportation and accommodation plans will be announced soon.

According to organizers, beyond competition, the race is designed as an experiential journey. Runners can combine the event with activities such as exploring the mangrove forest, visiting the beach and enjoying local cuisine during the four-day April 30-May 1 holiday.

Read Marathon, launched in 2019, is Vietnam’s largest running series. It has been held in destinations such as Quy Nhon, Hue, Ha Long, Da Nang and Hai Phong, attracting an average of 10,000 runners per event.
