Real Madrid re-elects Florentino Perez as president until 2029
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was re-elected with a mandate until 2029 on Sunday after running for the position unopposed.
“There has been only one candidacy… (Perez) is hereby proclaimed president of Real Madrid,” said Los Blancos in a statement released on Sunday. Madrid announced the news after a 4-1 thrashing of Las Palmas, which helped them move to the top of the Spanish premiere division, La Liga.
Perez, 77, has now not faced opposition in four elections (2013, 2017, 2021, and 2025) since returning to the club in 2009 for a second spell at the helm.
The CEO of a prominent Spanish construction company, ACS Group, was first elected as Madrid president in 2000, overseeing the club’s Galactico era, and resigned in 2006.
Real Madrid has been enjoying a successful era under Perez’s helm, bagging five LaLiga five titles─in 2012, 2017, 2020, 2022, and 2024─and six Champions League trophies, including an unprecedented three-in-a-row from 2016 to 2018.
Mbappe, Ancelotti, Guler: Perez at center of fan criticism
Real Madrid tops La Liga with 46 points after 20 matches, achieving 14 wins, four draws, and two losses, overtaking their closest rival, Atletico Madrid, by a two-point margin.
However, the Madridistas have been disappointing its fans in the UEFA Champions League, as it stands at 20th place at the end of six played matches out of eight, with three wins and three losses.
A common critique of Perez’s tenure lies in the club’s approach to transfers and squad planning. The focus on high-profile signings, such as Kylian Mbappe, has often been at the expense of addressing structural weaknesses, particularly in defense and midfield depth.
Despite Perez’s success in delivering trophies, detractors highlight that his “Galactico-style” philosophy risks over-reliance on star players rather than fostering a balanced and cohesive squad.
Additionally, Ancelotti’s squad rotation policy has come under fire for failing to give sufficient opportunities to young talents like Arda Guler and Fran Garcia, potentially stalling their development.
