Red One becomes biggest film debut on Prime Video
It seems like Christmas has come early for the makers of Red Onestarring Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, and JK Simmons. As many as 50 million people watched the Christmas fantasy adventure on Prime Video, reported the streaming service provider. Thus, it has reportedly become the most-watched film that debuted on Prime Video in the first fourteen days of its release. It beat Road House to hold the said distinction. The film revolves around Santa Claus’ bodyguard (Johnson) and bounty hunter (Chris Evans) and their search for the missing Santa/Red One (Simmons).
Reportedly made on a whopping $250 million budget, the Jake Kasdan directorial had a limited theatrical release in North America and the UK earlier this year, but it received a lukewarm response from audiences back then. However, Amazon MGM Studios’ head Jennifer Salke said, “With Red Onethere was no doubt that strategy needed to include a theatrical release and associated marketing campaign, which drove audiences to theaters and generated awareness for the film with viewers who would ultimately tune in on Prime Video. It’s rewarding to see our plan pay off for customers, and we are incredibly thankful to the entire filmmaking team and cast who helped make it happen.”
Amazon, which owns Prime Video, is yet to clarify how it calculated the viewership figures for Red One. Conversely, Disney+ and Netflix divide the length of a feature by the overall viewer count.
