Registration of more than 30.51 lakh families in less than 3 months under Chief Minister Health Scheme in Punjab

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government has set a new standard by providing public health services on a large scale under the Chief Minister Health Scheme. Within three months after the launch of the scheme on January 8, 2026, more than 30.51 lakh families have been registered and an example has been set for the entire country by sanctioning free treatment worth Rs 292 crore. Giving information about the scale and pace of implementation of this scheme, Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said that this scheme is rapidly providing real financial relief and health services to lakhs of families of Punjab.

What did Balbir Singh say?

Addressing a press conference held at Punjab Bhawan, Dr Balbir Singh said, “So far, 30,51,325 beneficiaries have been registered under the scheme and 1,77,097 free treatments have been sanctioned. The total sanctioned cost of treatment is Rs 292 crore, out of which Rs 267 crore has already been sanctioned. We have settled 71,000 claims and the empaneled hospitals have been Rs 60 crore has been paid.”

Underlining the importance of this achievement, the Health Minister said that the Punjab government has left other states behind on every parameter. He said, “This is a historic achievement for Punjab. Be it registration, number of families covered or number of patients receiving treatment – ​​Punjab stands first in every respect.”

Assuring timely payment to hospitals, Dr. Balbir Singh said that the Bhagwant Mann government has developed a strong system for payment of dues. He said that all the dues till March 31 will be paid by April 15, due to which not a single rupee will remain outstanding of any hospital.

Giving information about the new payment structure to be implemented from April 1, he said that claims up to Rs 1 lakh will be settled within 15 days, while bills above Rs 1 lakh will be settled within a week. In cases that are disputed or require verification, this process will be completed within a month.

What did Dr. Balbir Singh say on the actual impact of the scheme?

Throwing light on the actual impact of the scheme, Dr. Balbir Singh said that the scheme is already benefiting people of every age group. Its beneficiaries include everyone from a one year old child to a 99 year old woman, who has undergone cancer treatment under this scheme. He told that this scheme covers more than 100 serious heart related diseases including complex procedures. Giving an example, he said that under the scheme, a patient with a serious condition like “ruptured sinus” has been successfully treated in Patiala Medical College.

Dr. Balbir Singh further said that when the government is spending Rs 292 crore on free treatment services, it directly means that the money of the general public is being saved. He said that the state health agency, in collaboration with United India Insurance, is ensuring uninterrupted access to universal health coverage across Punjab.
