Selection Criteria — How the Merit List Is Prepared

No written examination is conducted for India Post GDS recruitment. The merit list is prepared entirely on the basis of marks obtained in the Secondary School Examination, which is the Class 10 board examination, aggregated to a percentage calculated to an accuracy of 4 decimal places. Candidates with higher Class 10 marks have better chances of being shortlisted. In cases of equal marks, age and other tiebreaker criteria as specified in the recruitment rules are applied.

How Many Candidates Were Shortlisted in the First Merit List

India Post released the first merit list covering more than 28,000 Gramin Dak Sevak posts. Here is the state-wise and circle-wise breakdown of candidates shortlisted in the first merit list.

Andhra Pradesh Circle: 1,048 candidates. Assam Circle: 639 candidates. Bihar Circle: 1,338 candidates. Chhattisgarh Circle: 1,153 candidates. Delhi Circle: 38 candidates. Gujarat Circle: 1,777 candidates. Haryana Circle: 270 candidates. Himachal Pradesh Circle: 518 candidates. Jammu and Kashmir Circle: 267 candidates. Jharkhand Circle: 908 candidates. Karnataka Circle: 1,020 candidates. Kerala Circle: 1,691 candidates. Madhya Pradesh Circle: 2,102 candidates. Maharashtra Circle: 3,547 candidates. North East Circle: 1,003 candidates. Odisha Circle: 1,191 candidates. Punjab Circle: 261 candidates. Rajasthan Circle: 634 candidates. Tamil Nadu Circle: 2,009 candidates. Telangana Circle: 607 candidates. Uttar Pradesh Circle: 3,168 candidates. Uttarakhand Circle: 436 candidates. West Bengal Circle: 2,963 candidates.

What the Second Merit List Means for Candidates

The second merit list covers posts that remain vacant after the first round, either because shortlisted candidates did not complete document verification, did not meet eligibility criteria during verification, or withdrew from the process. Candidates who were not shortlisted in the first merit list but remain in the applicant pool are eligible to appear in the second merit list, provided their marks meet the revised cutoff for the remaining vacancies in their applied circle.

The second merit list is typically shorter than the first in total numbers but can offer a significant opportunity for candidates who narrowly missed the first cutoff, particularly in high-vacancy circles like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh.

What to Do After the List Is Released

If your name appears in the India Post GDS 2nd Merit List 2026, note the document verification date and venue mentioned in the merit list communication carefully. Prepare all required original documents including Class 10 marksheet, birth certificate, caste certificate if applicable, identity proof, address proof, and any other documents specified in the recruitment notification. Failure to complete document verification within the specified window results in disqualification from the selection process regardless of merit list inclusion.
